Launched in Brittnay in 1975, the concept of Small Cities Of Character aims to create a network of communities blessed with exceptional heritage and to protect them.
Since then, Small Cities Of Character has fulfilled its objectives to safeguard and preserve authentic French urban heritage; stimulate their economy; and develop cultural tourism and in these towns all year around.
Regarding a national charter signed in 2009, Small Cities Of Character aims to protec, restore and maintain their heritage, bringing it to life, and promoting it to both local residents and visitors to boost their local economy.
Small Cities Of Character project was introduced in Champagne in 2012 and in the Ardennes in 2014. The Grand Est Region currently has 13 municipalities involved in the project.
